Mission Hills Phuket Golf Resort & Spa
If you are looking for a sea facing picture postcard golf course to play whilst in Phuket, the Jack Nicklaus designed Phuket golf course at Mission Hills Golf Resort and Spa is the one to play. The golf course sits amongst mangrove forests on the scenic north-east coast of Phuket. The course has incredible ocean views from almost every hole and even includes several ocean holes playing out over the Andaman Sea – you’ll feel like you are in a PGA tournament when you play this course!
- Paspalum Sea Isle 2000 grass on the putting surfaces
- The signature 12th hole and handicap 1 is the longest par 4 on the golf course, measuring 481 yards from the black tees
- Service both on the golf course and at the accompanying spa and resort is first class
- As you would expect from a Jack Nicklaus design, many people believe this course to have the best layout on the island. With waste bunkers, Twin Island greens it really captures the imagination.
Mission Hills Phuket Golf Resort & Spa Playing Tips
The best tip we can offer about Mission Hills is not to expect too much and enjoy the scenery. The Course has never been in pristine condition and there are better courses on the island but if you go with open mind you will have the best views from any golf course in Phuket
Three special holes at Mission Hills from the black tees are:
3rd Hole – par 4 – stroke 2. 420 yards.
A good drive down the left hand side takes out the creek that runs all the way down the right, check with the caddie re the exact distance, but it is a long way to the bunker and you should be aiming at it. Now the fun begins, you should have between 180 – 210 yards to a green which is long and shaped like an inverted bowl. There is quite a bit of room behind so if your 3 wood is your favourite club, don’t be scared. There is water just short and right of the green and the same creek runs all the way around the right side of the green around the back and out in to the Andaman Sea less than 100 yards away. There is also a bunker short and left of the green. The option to lay up is complicated by the fact the waste bunker leaves you a very narrow area to aim for and laying up short of the waste bunker still leaves a 110yd wedge. But still better than being wet!! This is a really great hole.
5th Hole – par 4 – stroke 6. 376 yards.
You can make this an easy hole physically with a good drive – but mentally you still have to hit to a narrow island green!! For long hitters really go for it down the left (there is little risk as even if you go way left you will end up on the 3rd fairway with an easy lay up shot) and hope you make it to the down slope about 235yds out, you will then get a terrific bounce and leave a wedge to the green. Alternatively be accurate and go down the right, but stay out of the waste bunker, the right side will allow you to get some run and leave you with a level stance to play an 7 or 8 iron to the island green (your ball will plug and die if your drive lands on the up slope down the left). Nothing difficult physically. Anything short on approach to this island green rolls back into the water and whilst bunkers left and right give you some protection – but you need to be accurate with your approach. TIP – have a look at the pin position and where the bunkers are when you play the 2nd hole – it is the same island green.
15th Hole – par 5 – stroke 15. 517 yards.
With the wind at your back it is time to open up the shoulders, control the mind and go long down the middle – anything just right of the left side bunkers is perfect. From there it is a good solid 3 wood to the green – easy for me as a lefty because I can draw it in, but most long hitting right handers will get there as well. Once you are up with the fairway bunkers the line is straight at the top of the beer hut – it is usually a blind shot to the green – and let it fade (or draw) in. The natural contours of the land short of the green also help the ball move left to right. Roll in the eagle put and go get yourself a beer – you deserve it!! One trap to remember is that there is a bunker to the left of the green, and you will be facing the creek over the green if you have to play out of the bunker (the creek is only 24yards away) – if you are shaky at bunker shots, this is a good one to avoid! If you are not that long – it is best to take your preferred club off the tee and if that is a 3 wood that is great as it probably takes the left sided bunkers out of the equation, then your 2nd 3 wood shot should leave you with a nice 100yd wedge. The lay of the land is a bit uneven just short of the green so you are better chipping from a bit further back with a good lie. Beware, there is a second bunker down the left lurking for the slightly pulled 2nd shots.
